On Wednesday, it was revealed that Martin Zubimendi’s season is all-but over. Real Sociedad have been without their pivot for the last two matches, and he’s now not expected to take any part in the three upcoming fixtures.

Speaking to the media (via Relevo), La Real head coach Imanol Alguacil confirmed that Zubimendi has suffered a setback in his injury recovery.

“The bad news is motivated by the fact that Zubimendi has had a small relapse, and just like that I told you last week that I thought he could arrive for Thursday, having that small relapse he does not arrive for tomorrow, nor for Sunday, and I don’t think he’ll be fit for Atletico Madrid, either.”

This is a big blow for La Real in their pursuit of a top six finish in La Liga, and it’s also concerning for Spain too. Zubimendi is expected to be in Luis de la Fuente’s squad for Euro 2024, but now, that is looking less assured.

Zubimendi’s situation will be monitored over the coming weeks, and all associated with Spain and Real Sociedad will hope that he can recover quickly.
