The New York Yankees took Friday's series opener in the Bronx 4-2, fending off the Chicago White Sox' multiple rally attempts.

Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge homered for the Yankees, while Nestor Cortes escaped multiple jams to keep Chicago off the board.

The White Sox took advantage of a throwing error to tie the game in the third but squandered several scoring opportunities. The South Siders started to rally late but couldn't overcome a three-run deficit.

The Pale Hose put a runner in scoring position with less than one out in the first, fourth, and fifth innings. Cortes got out of runners on the corners and one out in the first by inducing short flyouts from Paul DeJong and Andrew Benintendi.

Hits and Misses

The Sox got on the board in the third when a two-base throwing error and stolen base allowed Zach Remillard to reach third and score on Andrew Vaughn’s single.

The White Sox threatened in the top of the fourth, but Corey Julks was left stranded after a one-out double. In the bottom half of the frame, a leadoff walk to Judge and back-to-back doubles by Verdugo and Stanton plated two runs to put the Yankees ahead 3-1.

The Sox looked poised to answer in the fifth when their first two hitters, Remillard and Tommy Pham, reached base, but Remillard’s mental lapse resulted in a pickoff at second base.

White Sox manager Pedro Grifol lifted starter Mike Clevinger in the fifth with two outs for lefty Tanner Banks. An intentional walk to Judge followed Juan Soto’s double, and Banks entered to face the left-handed Verdugo. Verdugo flew out on the first pitch to end the inning.

However, Stanton greeted Banks in the sixth with a solo blast that put the Yankees up 4-1.

Short Rally

The White Sox rallied for a run in the eighth when Pham doubled and scored on Vaughn’s base hit.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone kept former White Sox Ian Hamilton, a righty, in the game to pitch to Gavin Sheets.

Hamilton’s night ended after Sheets’s double. Lefty Caleb Ferguson entered to pitch to Andrew Benintendi, who struck out before Corey Julks lined out to end the threat.

Clay Holmes retired the White Sox side in the ninth, earning the save and allowing a walk.

News and Notes

The White Sox made a series of roster moves ahead of their six-game road trip. Danny Mendick returned from the injured list, and Corey Julks got the call from Triple-A Charlotte to make his White Sox debut.

Rafael Ortega, designated for assignment to make room for Julks, cleared waivers and accepted his assignment to Triple-A Charlotte.
